Special Programs
SHUMC offers confirmation class each year, usually after the start of the calendar year, for children
11 and older. The class typically lasts for eight weeks, with children required to attend at least seven sessions and to complete
all of the homework to qualify for the confirmation ceremony. The class is usually taught by a lay member of the congregation under
the pastor's supervision.
The eight topics are:
1. God, Sin and Grace
2. Jesus Christ - Our Savior and Lord
3. The gift of the Holy
Spirit
4. How we worship
5. The church's function
6. United Methodist history
7. United Methodist beliefs
8. Baptism and commitment
Still the cornerstone of a solid Christian education, Sunday School is viewed as one of the most important
aspects of raising a child to be a responsible follower of Jesus. Our Sunday School hour is open to all ages from 9:45 to
10:45 a.m. each Sunday. Here is a brief summary of the classes we offer:
Preschool and Kindergarten — Children
learn basic
Bible stories and take part in fun activities.
1st– through 3rd-Graders — This class begins to build
the foundation for kids’
knowledge about Christ.
4th– and 5th-Graders — Students gain more
knowledge about Jesus and his love for all
humankind.
Youth — This class for sixth– through 12th-graders
emphasizes how to use the
Scriptures and Christ’s
teachings in everyday life.
From Easter egg hunts to Christmas musical programs, we strive to provide fun events for the children of
our church and for kids in the community.
